Adult fanfiction review
Quite awhile ago I started to post my very first LB fanfic (Destination Unknown) on the adult fanfic site, but I ended up stopping at chapter three because I’ve got it posted everywhere else. Not only that but it doesn’t get a lot of hits over there. I’ve only received one review for it so far. Well tonight I found another review in the spam folder of my email. It wasn’t a very nice one, but it made me laugh a little. This person stated that my OC was the worst offending Mary Sue she had ever read in the LB world and that at least I made it obvious in the description of the story.
I admit, now that I read back over the story itself I see things that are a little cheesy, but I honestly have never considered Serenity to be a Mary Sue. In fact I’m pretty sure she’s not. I’ve even had other readers confirm this thought. Although she may have a few traits similar to one, I still don’t consider her to be offending. I just thought I would share that with you guys. I think it’s the first bad review I’ve ever gotten. And by saying that I’m not stating my writing is perfect, I know it’s not. I’ve just never gotten an offending comment like that before. It is really funny.
Ugg, and I’m going to stop there. It’s late, I have to take a shower and hit the hay.

Unfortunately some readers are quick to jump on labeling *any* female OC as a Mary Sue, despite any flaws they might have. What irks me is that how male characters can have Mary Sue-like (Gary Stu?) qualities and the readers will generally love them, but slap those same traits on a female character and the complaints will eventually come. The original definition of a Sue is seemingly lost upon certain people.
And if anything, at least you got a good laugh at the review!

I just read the review. Awesome.
While Serenity isn’t my favorite OC in the Lost Boys fandom, she’s far from the “worst offending Mary Sue in the Lost Boys world.” Either someone isn’t very widely read in Lost Boys fanfic or they’re just a troll. I’m wondering if the person read any of the chapters of if they’re just basing that on the description of the story you used. Either way, I’m all for negative reviews so long as the reviewer substantiates their claim. I’m not apt to taking anyone seriously that just says THIS SUCKS! and runs off. You just kinda have to go okay . . . and walk on.

Trust me, it’s not bothering, but I thought it was funny and I had to say something about it. I don’t mind if the review has something that I can use to improve on in future writings, like the ones you have left me (Donna) but saying that does nothing for me.
Is it a Gary stu? I thought it was a Mary stu, eh either way, Serenity isn’t perfect, but I did write her and I do like her and that’s just the way it is.

I’ve seen either Gary or Marty so I guess it’s just a preference. And yeah, it’s your character so you can do whatever you want. If the reader doesn’t it it, oh well. They can find another story to read. As Donna mentioned, it doesn’t sound like they’ve read a whole lot of other LB fics. I’ve come across some pretty bad ones with OCs that made me gag, but I’ve never bothered to review those stories. I just move on to better quality fics *psst like yours*

Thank you Dee! Can I call you Dee? Haha. I have two friends on here now that go by Marie. I like Dee. I know I’m weird.

Ha, ha, sure! No prob! I’ve actually noticed there were other Marie’s in the LB fandom which was weird (I didn’t think it was a common name). If I’d known this was the case I would’ve chosen another handle, LOL.
